Much of my published work has been writing articles for newspapers, magazines and newsletters. The skills for this type of writing transfer well to case studies, e-books, blog posts and web copy writing. I’ve included some examples of more recent work as well (you’ll notice I was not married at the time since I used my maiden name).
These first examples are from my college days at the Collegian newspaper and my first newspaper job after college at a small weekly newspaper, The Hamlin County Republican. The story for the Collegian won “Story of the Week” for the week it ran.
The next samples are from my time at the Watertown Public Opinion, a daily newspaper where I was the feature section editor, and from a freelance story done for Watertown Now magazine. The two stories for the Watertown Public Opinion were South Dakota Newspaper Association Better Newspaper Contest award winners: Today I will do a Random Act of Kindness won Best News Story, and Deafness doesn’t stop three girls won Best Feature Story.
The next two samples are from newsletters I wrote, one for a company I worked for (a General Electric call center), and one for my own company (Set A Scene Home Staging) which I ran for seven years.
Finally, I have included assignments and feedback from instructors from writing classes I’ve taken in the last five or six years. These give you a look at my creative writing abilities. Some of the formatting is a bit odd since they’re printed from websites, so please look past that.
